Harwin Elementary Iceman
Blog #6
Thursday, 09 February 2012 00:00
Well it's 6 days to ICEMAN and the kids are very excited... we have had students running UNBC hill, skating, skiing at Otway, running training with Cory, bootcamps with Shelly Williams, yoga with Lisa Neukomm and working out with the track and field club at UNBC.  We have entered 7 junior teams into the event!

I'm a bit nervous about ICEMAN.  I'm worried about running on the ice.  I like Shelly's bootcamps and the yoga with Lisa was fun.  The training has been a bit overwhelming for some people but I really like ICEMAN.  I think we are lucky to do ICEMAN because other school don't do it.  It was the first time I had even heard about ICEMAN.

I'm looking forward to Sunday.  I've liked the skating training because I love skating.  We have worked hard and alot of us did the ICEMAN last year and we were really good.  The hardest trainer has been Shelly and all the push ups she makes us do.  We are all doing really good.

The ICEMAN training is pretty fun, the event sounds fun.  I think it's going to go well because we have been cooperating and putting in alot of effort.  The challenging part was the training; push ups, sit ups, running through the crusty snow with Cory.  My favorite part of training has been running up UNBC hill.  I want to try the ICEMAN.  I have never done an event like this before.

Outdoor Running Training Session at Harwin Elementary with Stride & Glide Instructor Cory, Nov. 29th, 2011

By Taylor P and Latika K

The training today was hard but fun.  Running against the wind with snow going in your eyes made it hard to see where you were going.  It was challenging and I can definately feel it in my legs, it was a good workout.  Cory is a really cool guy and he is really fit... like really fit... he can run so elegantly while we all stomp, stomp, stomp.

By Gage R. Grade 7 student

I did 42 laps today and the pool and I feel I worked really hard during this session.  I liked how we did the laps and I learned how to pace my breathing with my strokes.

We went to the Aquatic Center on Tuesday. We did our laps, there was a lane for newer swimmers and a lane for faster swimmners. I did 30 laps!! I was excited to do this training. It was fun but after I was pretty tired.

Today we ran with Cory from Stride & Glide "woo hoo". I like the skipping practice that taught me how to run. I learned that I will slip and fall if I wear skate shoes to run!

Running UNBC hill on Wednesday was hard and a challenge but I think I got through it okay. Our Bootcamp workshop with Shelly Williams on Thursday was challenging. I liked doing the bicycles and burpees the most. I felt that most of the students pushed it an worked really hard and listened to Shelly alot!
Latika K.

I think UNBC hill was a challenge but once I got to the top I felt that I was really successful and I was really proud of myself for accomplishing the hill. I thought our workout with Shelly was fun and hard but it was worth it in the end.

This is my second year as a Harwin Frozen Warrior. I feel that our class is going to give 100%. I feel that I am going to be more successful than last year. I think I am going to be fitter than I was last year and I want to try to run all five K's during the event. I'm excited about all the field trips we are going to do to work on getting to the ICEMAN. I'm excited about working more with Shelly and getting to the harder workouts. I'm looking forward to the fun running workouts that Shayne and Cory do with us.
Latika K.

Since this is my first year at Iceman, I will do my best. I think it will help me be more successful in activities and in life. I feel that I am going to give 100% effort.

UNBC Hill With Shelli Williams
Thursday, 03 November 2011 12:03

photoThis was a training session with Shelli Williams! We ran UNBC hill yesterday and it was a huge success!  Our students know what to expect this year and ICEMAN is becoming part of our school culture.   I'm finding that they are so motivated and excited for this adventure and really working hard.  Many of the students represented Harwin in the PG kids triathalon and the increase in their fitness levels is impressive over last year.  We are working on small health goals "small changes" such as increasing water intake, not drinking pop, eating breakfast etc.. The blogs are starting this week and we should have a few "first few weeks" blogs tomorrow!

Thanks so much for your support, we are looking forward to working with Stride & Glide again this year!

Cheers,

Marnie Alexander, Harwin Community Coordinator

Harwin Frozen Warriors – Take 2
Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:14

That's right, the Harwin Frozen Warriors are back at it again for the 2012 Iceman. Last year we had one class participate and this year we are up to two, as well as parents and teachers. In total, there are about 70 people involved in the training right now. Yes, you read that correctly, 70 people!

Marnie and I met today and they are already up and “running” so to speak, and we are back on board to give a hand again this year. It's exciting and motivational to see so many kids and parents getting excited over such a great local event and probable lifestyle change.  So stay tuned again this fall as we continue to keep you updated with how the training is going and what we are up to.

For a little history on the Harwin Frozen Warriors you can see the posts below from the 2011 training year, or see our first post from last year for more of where this idea came from.

It's Iceman time!!

Skiiing & Skating Next
Friday, 14 January 2011 16:33
Next week our class has planned to go cross country skiing (called off this week due to weather) and skating, our class is really excited and some are nervous.

Dan Wigham from Integris Credit Union gave us funding of $2500.00 for the next two years!!

Our class is working hard to make a calendar wall for February 13th, 2011. We are really working hard for all the events. We can't wait until Feb.13th, 2011.

Yoga Time
Wednesday, 01 December 2010 16:00

For the training today we did yoga with Shelly. The poses we did were the mountain, warrior 1 and 2 and the turtle position. We also did a thing where you lay down, turn off the light and imagine a ball of light inside you (mine was a disco ball) and inhale, exhale and let the ball through you. I thought this was excellent. It was the best practice ever!

RAH RAH For The Frozen Warriors!!
Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:18
RAH RAH for the Frozen Warriors!! We have had a great time training. We liked having guest speakers in our classroom. We learned about keeping our body in shape and what is good for us to eat. We have realized that training in rain, sun or even snow is okay! We know it is going to train at one point but we don't care. We have learning how training. We have learned how training is helping to keep our bodies fit and how to stop our BAD eating habits.

2011 HARWIN FROZEN WARRIORS
Monday, 18 October 2010 11:50

We have done quite a few training sessions so far. We have definately seen improvement. We are working on running. First it was hard but now it is getting easier. We also did stretching. The school is really helping us by starting other programs such as volleyball and bootcamp. Some of us are training by ourselves too. We run lap, go swimming and much more. Overall the ICEMAN is amazing and fun. We have named ourselves the 2011 HARWIN FROZEN WARRIORS.

Thankyou!

Megan and Rachelle.

Project Iceman
Project Iceman, that's what I'm calling it anyways, until the kids come up with a name for themselves. Today was day one and I'm not sure who was more excited, me or the kids. But before I get to that, a little history so that you know what I am talking about.
